Description

'Practice makes perfect' is as applicable to passing FE Exam as it is to anything else. This is the "Second Edition" of study guide and it is also centered on the idea of 'problem-based learning'. It contains over 500 focused problems with detailed solutions including Alternative-Item Types. It covers all sections of NCEES FE Electrical and Computer exam specification including: Mathematics – Probability and Statistics – Ethics and Professional Practice – Engineering Economics – Properties of Electrical Materials – Engineering Sciences – Circuit Analysis – Linear Systems Signal Processing – Electronics – Power – Electromagnetics – Control Systems – Communications Computer Networks – Digital Systems – Computer Systems – Software Development. This study guide is specially designed to assist students in developing familiarity with NCEES FE Reference Handbook which is the only allowed reference material during FE exam. Students will find relevant reference details and section specific tips at the beginning of each chapter. Target audience of this book includes final year college students, new graduates as well as seasoned professionals who have been out of school for some time. Summary: Not a resource for learning new material for the first time, and must be accompanied by other sources. Nonetheless, it is an amazing starting point for studying and is an invaluable tool for practicing solving problems.Cons: (1) Hardly dives into underlying theory or explanations of important concepts; however, this book is advertised as a set of practice problems, not a review text. So this isn't a fault of the author or the book, but it is something to keep in mind. (2) Some solutions are lacking and will say things not far from "the answer is A because it's A." For this reason, you'll need to go to other resources for clarification. (3) I found the notation in the digital systems section to be unclear, especially regarding flip-flops and clock cycles. This was frustrating because I lean way more EE than CpE so I really needed to review this section. However, once I was able to decipher the author's notation this section became a good resource.Pros: Just as advertised, hundreds of practice problems over all sections covered on the FE. You should definitely be using all the resources you have - texts, old notes, credible online sources, knowledgeable peers and teachers - in conjunction with this book. But if you use this book and those other sources thoroughly, you will be prepared to take the FE exam. Furthermore, since this book covers every section of the FE, it will force you to work on your blind spots/weak areas.Comparison to like products: If you have the means, then I also recommend you pick up the NCEES practice exam and one of Wasim's practice exams as well (prioritize the NCEES one though, since they are the source of the actual FE exam). The other popular review manual on the market is Lindeburg's. I was lucky enough to be able to borrow the Lindeburg review manual from a friend for free. Lindeburg's book has far fewer questions; however, his questions are generally more challenging than Wasim's questions and therefore will really test your understanding. Personally I didn't care for most of his actual review material beyond the problems... his explanations are long and yet not as good as an actual textbook or lecture on the particular topic. In summary, if you can get Lindeburg's book, do it because his practice problems are really good (the issue is there's just not many of them), but if you only have the means for one, then I recommend going with Wasim's book due to the huge quantity of practice problems.
