I was hoping this book would have a little more meat to it. It summarizes the novels and begins to place them in a historical context, but in many cases the entry feels incomplete. I purchased the book hoping that it would illuminate the social impact that particular novels following their publishing; in many instances, there is no clearly researched indication of what the actual societal impact was.However, this is a perfectly adequate reference list of social novels and might be useful simply for its recommendations of novels from different cultures and societies.I would not assign this book in an academic setting - it would be wasted on students, who might resent its cost.
