The original publication was a nice, small handbook. The version I have was published in 1916, 5th edition, price: $2.00, published by The Chemical Rubber Company, of Cleveland, Ohio, a little over half an inch thick. The 71st edition is a heavy monster of a book with tissue thin pages weighing many pounds at 3.75 inches thick and growing every year. Chemistry and physics are today far too complex to house in one book! They certainly need separate volumes. As for the content, I find myself using the 1916 version more often when I am in a hurry to look up something. The modern version takes far longer just to search the index to find anything. Simplicity is virtuous. To make it simple, one could make this into a 3 volume set (or more) - inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, and physics.
