This book is vastly misleading on the religion of Islam, and perpetuates stereotyped and inaccurate misinformation regarding the religion. As a Muslim, arguably my largest brush-up with Islamophobia was in my university’s World Religion class through the teaching of this book. The inaccuracies on Islam found in this book are plentiful, to say the least. It would, honestly, be more beneficial to learn Islam through Wikipedia than through this book.In addition, though I may not be a scholar of Islam, as a burgeoning scholar, as a doctoral student of both International Relations and Political Theory (where my Master’s thesis was on Islamic political theory), I can especially emphasize that the portions of the book that detail Islamic political thought, especially regarding Jihad, are so inaccurate that I would go as far as to say that they are damaging to the world of academia. How this got passed the peer review phase, if there was one, genuinely baffles me as - to be unorthodox and frank - you could learn more accurate information about Islamic political thought and the complexities of Jihad from a tree than you could from this book. It is genuinely that misleading and inaccurate. In summation, this book is so inaccurate (especially in that it often perpetuates discredited Islamophobic stereotypes) that it represents a true travesty for it to be used in an academic setting.
