My 7-year-old dug into these the day we got them. The 'comic-book-style' guide book (which is actually a textbook in disguise) is actually entertaining, and teaches concepts in a clever way, with lots of humor mixed in. My son *hates* his school math class because he complains that the teacher repeats everything "a million times." The guide book moves from topic to topic logically, but quickly, and poses a lot of interesting puzzles for the kids to solve to really get them thinking about math, and he likes that. The practice book (I hate to call this a workbook, because that has the connotation of pages and pages of dusty repetitive problem solving, and this is NOT like that) has tear-out pages for kids to 'work' on that that are indexed to specific topics in the guide, but it's not drudgery, because the author clearly took a lot of pains to make practice fun. (For example, the first topic they cover is a geometry unit about shapes and angles. A typical 'workbook' would then have 2 or 3 pages of pictures of angles, and ask students to name them 'acute/right/obtuse' -- THIS book has a couple of pages of mazes, where you get from on side to the other by tracing only acute angles, or only obtuse angles; this is a bazillion times better, not only because the maze is an interesting puzzle for the kid to work on, but because he really needs to teach himself to "see" and recognize those angles in order to solve the maze.Honestly, I've loved every math product from these guys so far (my middle schooler took their pre algebra course, and I'm sampling their geometry book for fun,) and this one is every bit as good.
