Description

Luxury Liner 1lb is a flexible, barium infused mass loaded vinyl that's MADE IN THE USA. Uses include blocking the transmission of airborne sound waves coming from road, engine, and exhaust drone. Combine with a closed cell foam like OverKill Pro or jute material like Heat Wave Pro to block stubborn airborne noise. Recommended adhesives include super strong double sided tape, Dual Lock reclosable fasteners, and vinyl contact cement. The MLV can also be stapled, screwed, or nailed in place. Tensile Strength: 600 psi (ASTM D412) Tear Resistance: 100 lbf/in (ASTM D412)

Features

SOUNDPROOFING BASICS - There are three keys to soundproofing. To block airborne noise, barriers need to be DENSE, LIMP, and AIRTIGHT. MLV is both dense and limp but should be installed with no gaps for best performance. Plan for 100% coverage!

HOW TO USE MASS LOADED VINYL – Luxury Liner MLV sheets are pre-cut to smaller sizes for small-scale projects where a full MLV roll is too much. Common uses include soundproof boxes, generator enclosures, pool pumps, automotive, and anywhere with small gaps to be filled. Fully enclose the noise source and seal gaps and seams.

BLOCK AIRBORNE NOISE – Luxury Liner’s dense 1/8” thick barrier is designed to block airborne sound waves. Each sheet is 24” x 54” (9 sq. ft.) and weighs 1 lb per square foot with an STC rating of 26. For structural vibrations, use Damplifier Pro sound deadening mats instead.

DURABLE AND EASY TO INSTALL – Odorless with 3x tensile strength of lower quality MLV, Luxury Liner is fire-tested (FMVSS 302) and heat rated to 150° F. Install with vinyl contact cement, nails, screws & washers, or hang with grommets. Never install directly next to a heat source, always maintain a 6" air gap.

I finally wised up and insulated the floor of my '17 Outback. I had already added butyl rubber matting and closed cell foam to the doors but I had ignored the floors. Bad decision on my part. I know now that much of the road and tire noise comes through the floor and the wheel wells. So after removing the seats and the carpet I installed closed cell foam and mass loaded vinyl (MLV =Second Skin Luxury Liner) on top of the OEM sound deadening (butyl rubber). Each component plays a part in noise control: 1) butyl rubber matting with a foil backing stops metal from vibrating, 2) a closed foam pad (quiets rattles and helps control temperature inside the car), and 3) mass loaded vinyl (stops the noise in it's tracks) . Of course step 3 is much easier to do on a horizonal surface (the floor) than it is on a vertical surface (the doors) because MLV is HEAVY and isn't easy to hang inside a door. So many installers don't use MLV in their car's doors and I didn't either. BUT...adding those 2 extra materials to the floor made a huge difference in my car. I don't have a decibel meter but everyone who rides in the car notices the difference now. I'm very pleased with the end result. Is my car as quiet as a luxury car? No for several reasons. My Subaru wasn't engineered to be a luxury car from the ground up like a Mercedes or a BMW. The metals used are lighter, the window glass isn't as thick and the suspension isn't ...well, luxuriously quiet! Second Skin Luxury Liner is easy to cut with scissors and somewhat flexible. It lays nicely on flat surfaces but is too thick to conform to indentations in the floor. The manufacturer recommends that the edges be taped down, but I don't think it could move with the carpet installed over it.
